SIU – Investigating Kingston Police

The provinces police watchdog is investigating after a man suffered serious injuries during an arrest by Kingston Police.

The Special Investigations Unit says the man was injured when a vehicle was stopped coming off the 401 shortly after midnight on September 8th.

A 38 year old passenger in the vehicle was arrested and taken to hospital with a serious injury.

The agency says two Kingston Police officers are under investigation. Eight other officers have been designated witness officers, or an officer involved in the incident.

 

Sharbot Lake – Tornado

Central Frontenac says funding may be available for people who suffered serious damage from a downburst or tornado that hit the Sharbot Lake area on Friday afternoon.

Environment Canada is investigating to confirm what type of storm did the damage.

The township says there is a clear path of destruction about 100m wide and at least a couple of kilometres long in a rural area. The storm caused significant damage to cottages, homes, vehicles and other buildings.  Most of the damage was caused by falling trees.

Central Frontenac is encouraging anyone with damage to contact the municipal office saying there may be storm damage funding available for homeowners.

 

Cycling Fatality

The Quinte Ballet School of Canada says the cyclist who died after being hit by a vehicle on Sunday in Prince Edward County was a student at the school.  17 year old Sara Holton died in the collision at the intersection of Highway 62 and Union Road near Mountainview.  Her parents posted a note on her Facebook page saying the driver of the vehicle was not at fault

Visitation and the funeral for Sara Holton will take place on Friday at the John R. Bush Funeral Home in Belleville.

 

Serious Injuries – Westport Crash

A 16 year old is in Kingston General Hospital with serious injuries after being ejected from a vehicle that rolled over on County Road 42 and Noonan Road Monday night.

The OPP says a 17 year old from North Grenville was heading east on County Road 42 when he lost control of his vehicle and it rolled into a ditch.

There were two passengers – the 16 year old was ejected from the car.

The driver and the other passenger suffered minor injuries.

 

Suspicious Fire

Kingston Police are investigating a fire at 507 Days Road on Monday night.

The fire caused damaged to an apartment.  Kingston Fire and Rescue contacted police and they are investigating.  Anyone with information that may help with the investigation is being asked to contact Kingston Police or Crime Stoppers.

 

Power Outage – Power Restored

Hydro One had a crew working overnight to restore power in a portion of Kingston’s west end and on Simcoe and Wolfe Islands.  The power went off in the Auden Park area…the Point Pleasant area…and on the islands during thunderstorms overnight.  It was restored around 5:20 this morning.

 

Kingston WritersFest

The 10th annual edition of Kingston WritersFest opens today.

The festival brings together a variety of authors, writers, editors, publishers and others involved in publishing and selling books for the next five days.

K-Rock’s Sideshow is the moderator a session on Sunday with Journalist Michael Barclay who wrote the book about the Tragically Hip called…The Never-Ending Present: The Story of Gord Downie and The Tragically Hip.

Napanee – Cannabis for Sale

Napanee’s cannabis producer says it has shipped its first recreational cannabis, ahead of marijuana legalization on October 17th.

VIVO Cannabis says its wholly-owned subsidiary, Canna Farms, has sent its first shipment of recreational cannabis to the British Columbia Liquor Distribution warehouse.

It says it will be making similar shipments in the next few weeks to Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and the Yukon.
