GoFundMe – Elgin Man

A long time employee with the city of Kingston and amateur hockey coach has died after a tree fell on him at his home in Elgin on Friday.

Darren Smith died when the tree was toppled during a windstorm on Friday.

Smith had worked for the city of Kingston since 1989 and Mayor Bryan Paterson has issued a statement offering condolences from the city.

Visitation is scheduled for Friday at the Wartman funeral home on Collins Bay Road and the funeral for Smith will take place on Saturday at the Edith Rankin Church.

Smith leaves behind his wife Diane, 17 year old daughter Abby and 19 year old son Jason.

A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to help Smith’s family.

It has raised almost 29 thousand dollars of its 50 thousand dollar goal.

Fire – Damage

Fire has damaged a townhouse unit at 507 Days Road.  Fire crews were called to the scene around 7:30 last night.

Kingston Police were still on the scene this morning to make sure it is secure for a fire inspector to work on determining the cause later today.

 

Westport Crash

Three people have been taken to hospital following a crash on County Road 42 at Noonan Road in Westport.

One of those people was rushed to Kingston General with life threatening injuries.

The crash took place around 10 last night and County Road 42 was closed while police investigated.  It has since been re-opened to traffic.

 

Missing Woman

The public is being asked to help locate an 86 year old woman from Westport who hasn’t been seen since yesterday afternoon.  Edith Thornton was last seen in the area of 9th Concession Road around 4p.m. yesterday.  She was wearing a green turtle neck, brown pants and black shoes.  Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Edith Thornton of Westport is asked to contact the OPP.

 

CAS – Fewer Children in Care

Family and Children’s Services of Frontenac, Lennox and Addington says it has been able to reduce the number of children in its care by 50%.  It says it had 435 children in its care in 2012 and by the spring of this year that number had been cut in half.  The agency’s 2018 Report says the key to reducing the number of children has been its use of prevention to keep families in crisis together.

 

Wandering Registry

A new registry launched by Kingston Police is aimed at helping find people who are at risk of wandering away from their homes.  The Vulnerable Persons Registry has been set up to help find people with dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, autism and other conditions.

It was launched on World Alzheimer Day.  The Alzheimer Society says there are more than 4,000 people in Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington who are living with dementia.

 

Signs of Election

There are now signs that there is actually a municipal election taking place in Kingston in just under four weeks.  Campaign signs became legal to display on Saturday and they’ve been popping up around the city.

The election takes place on October 22nd.

This morning the Greater Kingston Chamber of Commerce held a breakfast get together with the candidates running for mayor.

Tonight – the Coalition of Kingston Communities is holding an all candidates meeting for Collins Bayridge district.  It takes place at Bayridge Public School starting at 6:30.

 

LOTTO MAX – Kingston

There is word today the employees of the Kingston office of a courier company has won almost $300,000 in the Friday night LOTTO MAX draw.

There is nothing official yet…but the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation says one of two second prize winning tickets for the Friday night draw was bought in Kingston.

It is worth $297,615.70.

The other second prize ticket was purchased in Toronto.
