Injuries – Crash

Sentencing – Hit and Run Death

 

A man who pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of a crash that claimed the life of a 41 year old Kingston woman has been sentenced to 250 days in jail.

54 year old Kevin Heymans hit Christine Thompson with his SUV while she was crossing Princess Street near Midland Avenue on the night of December 8th, 2016.  Investigators determined the accident wasn’t his fault but he took off and hid the vehicle.  He was charged with failing to remain at the scene of the accident to render assistance.  He was also fined for not having insurance and didn’t have a driver’s license at the time of the accident.

 

Broncos Return

 

It was a night filled with sadness and celebration.

The Humboldt Broncos took to the ice last night in their first game since the bus crash that killed 16 in April.

29 yellow and green banners were unfurled honouring the 13 injured and remembering the 16 dead.

On the ice – the Broncos scored in the first period but lost to Nipawin 2-1.

 

Legislature – Notwithstanding Clause

 

Premier Doug Ford’s government is on track to pass controversial legislation to reduce the size of Toronto City Council.  The legislation was tabled yesterday and passed first reading with a vote of 63-17.  Ford says he will use the Charter’s notwithstanding clause to make sure the legislation passes in time for the municipal election in October.

New Democrat MPP’s…including Ian Arthur of Kingston and the Islands were ejected from the legislature for banging their desks and yelling shame in protest over using the notwithstanding clause.

People were also removed from the public gallery for heckling the premier.

 

Students – Garbage Lessons

 

Kingston has someone who teaches students how to ride the buses and now it will have city staff teaching Queen’s University students how to put out their garbage and recycling.

The city has announced staff will be in the University district on four nights this month to help student with the proper waste sorting and explain the city’s property standards.

 

Kingston Fall Fair

 

The 188th edition of the Kingston Fall Fair opens this afternoon at the Memorial Centre.

Organizers are hoping for a repeat of last year’s weather.  There was no rain and a record 20,000 people paid to enjoy time at the Fair.

The midway will be open….there’s entertainment at the grandstand and a demolition derby tonight.

The fair runs through Sunday.  Tomorrow is school day and about 500 students are expected to check out the agricultural displays.  Grandstand shows include The Motocross Thrill show twice a day and a demolition derby will close the fair Sunday afternoon.
