Heatwave

With the heat wave continuing today and tomorrow…health officials are asking you to check on neighbours or acquaintances who may be suffering through the heat for signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.  The very young and elderly people are the most susceptible.

Thirteen people were admitted to Kingston General Hospital over the Canada Day weekend due to heat stroke and heat exhaustion.

It happened around 5:15 on Saturday morning.  The man grabbed about $50 from the cashier and was last seen running east on Bath Road and then behind Deluxe Paints.

Inmate Death

A man serving time for incest and sexual interference has died in the minimum security unit at Joyceville Institution.  59 year old Ernest McConnell had been serving an eight year sentence since March of 2016.  A news release from the Correctional Service says McConnell died of apparent natural causes following an illness.

Man Doesn’t Exist

A strange but true story today about a 20 year old man who doesn’t exist according to government records.

Lucas James Veley was born at his parent’s home in Bellrock in March of 1998.  His birth wasn’t registered because he wasn’t born in hospital.

Ian McAlpine writes about it in the Whig today.

Veley can’t get officially documents like a birth certificate, health card, driver’s license or Social Insurance Number.  The 20 year old has a job waiting for him at Trousdales in Sydenham but they can’t hire him.

Lanark-Frontenac-Kingston MPP Randy Hillier says there are many others in the same position and he’s hoping the new PC government will convince bureaucrats at both the provincial and federal level to fix the problem.

Burning Ban

South Frontenac has announced a level 1 burning ban.

Fire Chief Darcy Knott issued the ban on all open air burning yesterday.  Camp fires and cooking fires are still allowed.

South Frontenac says any infraction of the burning ban will result in significant financial penalties.

Independence Day – Caesar Salad Day

From Tony’s Today in History file…the birth of a neighbouring nation and hail Caesar…salad that is.

It was on this day in 1776, the Declaration of Independence was signed in Philadelphia by representatives of all 13 American colonies. It incorporated the “Theory of Natural Rights” — stating that “all men are created equal” — that they possess the “inalienable rights” of “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”

And on this day in 1924, Caesar Gardini first concocted the salad which bears his name at his restaurant in Tijuana, Mexico. He mixed up the famous dressing for romaine lettuce and added garlic-flavoured croutons to serve at a party of Hollywood movie stars.
