St. Patrick’s Day

It was another wild St. Patrick’s Day in the student ghetto.  Nobody was injured when a garage roof collapsed under the weight of about 40 partiers on University Avenue.  Aberdeen Street was closed because of a large crowd and police handed out dozens of tickets for open booze.

Police did clear Aberdeen Street by mid-afternoon on Saturday.

Paramedics and ER staff at Kingston General Hospital were kept busy.  34 individuals were taken to hospital for treatment.

Lockdown – Collins Bay Medium Security

Inmates in the medium security unit at Collins Bay Institution spent their weekend locked in their cells with no visits.

A lockdown was put in place at around 2:00 Friday afternoon to enable staff to conduct an exceptional search.  The Correctional Service says the search was ordered to ensure the safety and security of the institution, its staff and inmates.  Visits have been suspended until the search is completed.

Ferries

The two new ferries being built for Wolfe Island and Amherst Island will be powered by electricity.

The province says they will be the first fully electric ferries in Canada that don’t use a cable to travel across the water.  Officials says eliminating fossil fuel for the two ferries will be like removing 13 hundred vehicles from the road.

Transit Funding

Kingston is getting 78 million dollars over the next 10 years to expand public transit.

The money is part of almost 12 billion dollars in transit funding for Ontario announced on Friday.

The federal government is contributing 42 million in funding and the provincial government is giving Kingston $35 million.

Queen’s – Colleges

Queen’s University has signed agreements with 10 Ontario colleges to allow students enrolled in a one-year health-centred certificate program to gain advanced standing in a Queen’s online health degree.

The new articulation agreements include St. Lawrence in Kingston, Loyalist in Belleville and Algonquin in Ottawa.  It will allow graduates of the colleges one year course who enroll in the Queen’s online Bachelor of Health Sciences program to receive credit for roughly one semester of courses.

Truckers – Relieves Himself Dangerously

It sounds like something from the Trailer Park Boys.

The 24 year old driver of a transport truck has been charged with careless driving on the 401 in the Mallorytown area.  Police pulled over the trucker last Thursday afternoon after reports he was swerving in an out of lanes on the 401.  The OPP determined the man had been relieving himself in a bottle while he was driving.

A news release from the OPP says…There are numerous service centers along Highway 401 that provide an assortment of amenities and services. Drivers are encouraged to stop and use them.
