Federal Budget

The prison farms at Collins Bay and Joyceville Institutions will be re-opened thanks to funding announced in the federal budget on Tuesday.  The budget allocates $4.3 million to reopen the farms starting in April.  They’ll be run by CORCAN…an arm of the Correctional Service.

Queen’s University Principal Daniel Woolf says it’s a good news budget for the university.  It contains a 25% increase in funding for agencies that provide research grants.  Woolf says it’s the largest-ever investment in investigator-led research in Canada.

The problem plagued Phoenix pay system will be replaced at an estimated cost of 16 million dollars over the next two years.

And…Former Ontario Health Minister Eric Hoskins will lead an advisory council on Pharmacare…aimed at establishing a national drug program.

Hard Landing

A student pilot wasn’t hurt but the two seater Cessna they were flying suffered damage during a hard landing at the Kingston Airport.

Emergency crews were scrambled to the airport around 10:30 yesterday morning for a light plane crash…but it turned out to be a hard landing.  The front landing gear of the Cessna collapsed damaging the landing gear and propeller.  George Scott of Fly Kingston says the female student from India had been training at the flight school since last September.

Students Threatened

The man arrested after a hold and secure at Bayridge Secondary School and Bayridge Public School faces two charges of uttering death threats.

Kingston Police have released details about the arrest of a man for threatening a student at Bayridge Secondary School on Monday.

Police say a student was threatened on social media by man who said he was in the parking lot of the school and had a weapon.  Police arrested a 19 year old man at a residence on Owens Crescent.  Police say he had also made threats to harm another student two days earlier.

Robberies – Charges/Warrants

Two Kingston men are facing charges for two separate armed robberies and Kingston Police have issued warrants for two other men from Kingston.

31 year old William James Bryant and 23 year old Tim Maguire face numerous charges including robbery, forcible confinement and assault.

Warrants have been issued for the arrests of 37 year old Calder Morley Smith and 36 year old Kevin William Harris.

One of the robberies took place at a residence on Nelson Street on February 18th.

The other incident involved the robbery at a residence on Glen Arden Court on January 31st.

Pink Shirt Day

It’s Pink Shirt Day…an initiative aimed at ending bullying.

Proceeds from the sale of pink t-shirts in Kingston will go to support child and youth programming at the Boys and Girls club of Kingston & Area.

The shirts say “BE KINDER” on the front.
