Earthquake – Local

Two Queen’s University students were in Kathmandu when the devastating earthquake hit that region of Nepal.
The graduate students were working under the guidance of geology professor Laurent Godin.
The students are safe and staying in the US emergency compound.
They expect to return to Canada in a few days.

Earthquake – Funds
    
The earthquake has claimed the lives of over 43 hundred people…thousands of others have been injured and rescue workers haven’t reached many remote regions.

The Ontario government is pledging one-million dollars to the Red Cross to help relief efforts in Nepal.
The federal government has also pledged five-million dollars to help the relief effort.

Rogers is also waving long distance fees until May 12th for mobile customers trying to contact family or friends in Nepal.

Napanee – Fatal Crash

A 75 year old man from Napanee has died after his vehicle hit two parked cars on Sunday night.
Police say their investigation has determined Noel Elsbury was in medical distress when his car hit an unoccupied car parked on John Street…sped up and slammed into the rear of another unoccupied vehicle.
Elsbury was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital.

Deseronto Fire

Fire has destroyed a house in Deseronto.
A woman and her two adult sons were sleeping when the fire broke out.  They got out safely.
Neighbours have started a collection for the family who lost everything in the fire.
Arson – 15 year old

A series of small fires has led to the arrest of a 15-year-old Kingston boy.
A dumpster, discarded couch and two brush fires were set in the Rideau Heights area beginning around 7:30 Sunday night.
A resident of Wilson Street saw someone setting a fire around 10:30 Sunday night.
Police say the man made a citizen’s arrest and held the suspect until police arrived.
A 15 year old boy has been charged with two counts of arson.

Search – Personal Items Found

A search of the Bay of Quinte has failed to locate two young men who went on a fishing trip early Sunday morning.  Matt Fairman and Tyler Maracle of the Tyendinaga Territory were in a 14 foot aluminum boat.
Some items have been recovered by searchers.
The OPP underwater dive team will continue its search today.

Woman – Impaired

A 46 year old Kingston woman has been charged with impaired driving after a van wound up on the front lawn of a home in Kingston west.
A homeowner found a woman passed out behind the wheel on the front lawn of his Earnhart Street home at 6am on Saturday.

Day of Mourning

It’s a day organized labour has set aside to remember people who have died or been injured on the job.
Today is known as the International Day of Mourning.
The Kingston and District Labour Council is holding an event to mark the day at Kingston City Hall from 11:30 this morning to 1:00 this afternoon.

Hotel Dieu

Hotel Dieu Hospital is getting recognized for improving things for patients visiting its clinics.
The hospital has received a Best Practice Spotlight Organization Designation.
The designation follows a three-year initiative at the Kingston Hospital.
It implemented and evaluated five Best Practice Guidelines developed by the Registered Nurses’ Association to improve patient care.
