Fire – Attempted Murder

A 45 year old man from Kingston is facing three attempted murder charges after fire destroyed a mobile home in a trailer park on Bath Road in Millhaven.

The OPP was called to the trailer park about a disturbance at 12:25 a.m. on Saturday.

Police say a man had entered a home and assaulted a man and a woman.  The woman was taken to hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Police say three adults were able to escape from the home before it was destroyed in the fire.

The man from Kingston faces a long list of charges including the three counts of attempted murder.

Fatal Crash

The driver of a motorcycle has died in a crash on Perth Road north of Buck Lake.

The motorcycle was hit head on by a transport truck on a curve in the road on Saturday.

Another vehicle was also hit by the truck and flipped onto its side.

The name of the motorcycle driver hasn’t been released.

The driver of the transport received minor injuries and the three people in the other vehicle escaped without being injured.

Street Crime Unit

The Kingston Police Street Crime Unit has arrested a man and seized a gun.

Not much information is available this morning.

The 27 year old man was arrested yesterday and the investigation is ongoing.

The man is facing charges for numerous weapons offences.

Correctional Service – Freedom of City

Kingston has grown up with the Correctional Service.

Corrections Commissioner Don Head and Correctional staff marched to the front steps of Kingston City Hall on Sunday morning and was granted the Freedom of the City by Mayor Bryan Paterson.

It’s the first time any Canadian correctional service has been awarded Freedom of the City since confederation.  It is normally reserved for the military.

Mayor Paterson also decreed June 1st as Correctional Service of Canada Appreciation Day in recognition of 180 years of service in Kingston.

It began on June 1st, 1835 when Kingston Penitentiary first opened its doors.  It was known as the Provincial Penitentiary at Portsmouth and welcomed six inmates from the local jail.

Dart Home

Members of Canada’s Disaster Assistance Response Team are back home after spending a month helping the people of earthquake-stricken Nepal.

They arrived at C-F-B Trenton yesterday.

The team headquartered at CFB Kingston provided help including water purification, medical care and engineering support.

Tourism Week

The Kingston Economic Development Corporation says the three million tourists who visit the Kingston area every year pump more than $400 million into the local economy.

It’s kicking off Tourism Awareness Week with a BBQ starting at 11:30 this morning at the Visitor Information Centre across from City Hall.
