College Strike

There will not be classes at St. Lawrence College today…or any of Ontario’s 24 colleges.  Faculty have gone on strike.

The Ontario Public Services Employees Union says the two sides couldn’t resolve their differences ahead of the midnight strike deadline.

The College Employer Council, which bargains for the colleges, calls the strike completely unnecessary.  It says the union’s demands would have added more than 250-million dollars in annual costs.

No negotiations have been scheduled.

St. Lawrence College says all full-time programs have been suspended.

Homecoming

There were all kinds of great activities during homecoming at Queen’s…but…once again…the booze fuelled problems overshadowed the good stuff for many people in Kingston.

The drinking started early Saturday morning and continued all day with paramedics treating and transporting 68 patients to hospital for alcohol intoxication.

The Frontenac Paramedic Service says one person intentionally urinated on a paramedic’s equipment bag in an ambulance.

The head of the emergency department at Kingston General, Dr. David Messenger posted on Twitter that staff were verbally abused, vomited on and physically lashed out at – but carried on in a professional manner.

On Saturday…Kingston Police handed out 253 tickets and arrested 26 people…mainly for public intoxication.  Police say most of those arrested were not Queen’s University students.

Life Jackets

A close call for two 38 year old men after their boat sank in Lake Ontario about two miles off the shore of Prince Edward County.

The OPP was called to a home on Stinson Block Road at 2:30 Sunday morning after the men swam to shore and one knocked on the door asking for help.  One of their dogs also made it to shore but another dog was still missing yesterday.

The OPP says the men were able to swim to shore because they were wearing life jackets.

It took them about three hours to get to shore.
