Colleges – Strike Deadline

 

There could be a walkout by faculty at Ontario’s 24 community colleges as early as this coming Monday.

The College Employer Council says the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) rejected the colleges’ final offer.  The college bargaining team says faculty should be allowed to vote on the offer that includes a wage increase of 7.75% over four years.

OPSEU represents 12 thousand college staff including faculty at St. Lawrence College campuses in Kingston, Brockville and Cornwall.

 

End of Sears

 

Sears Canada has decided to pull the plug on efforts to keep the company afloat.  It is asking for court approval to liquidate its roughly 130 remaining stores…including the store at the Cataraqui Centre in Kingston.  The store in Kingston employs about 100 people.

The company that owns the Cataraqui Centre, Primaris Management, issued a statement yesterday saying…We have been working on replacement options in the event Sears closes…adding it is not prepared to discuss the options at this time.

 

South Frontenac Awards

 

Frontenac OPP and the South Frontenac Fire Departments have handed out awards to civilians, volunteers and firefighters.

The awards were given out last night in Sydenham.

Recipients included Paul Davies and Harold Lake.  The two men helped save the life of friend Rob Calihan of New York.  Calihan had suffered a heart attack at the Loughborough Inn in 2016.  The two men performed CPR on Calihan and he survived to attend the ceremony last night.

 

Wanted Man – Arrest

 

A man wanted by Kingston Police has been arrested in Mississauga.

Police issued a request last Monday for help from the public in locating 34 year old Matthew Glenn Greene.

Greene was arrested by Peel Regional Police on Friday of last week and returned to Kingston.

He’s been charged with assault, break and enter and three counts of breach of probation.

 

Stone Mills – Imitation Weapon

 

A 42 year old Stone Mills Township man has been charged with pointing an imitation gun at a delivery man.  The OPP says the delivery man was invited into a home on Embury Road on Friday and a man pointed a firearm at him.  The delivery man left and contacted police.

Police say they recovered an imitation firearm and Michael Shane has been charged with Possession of an Imitation Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose.

 

Napanee Man – Charges

 

A 20 year old man from Napanee is facing charges after a woman returned to her home and found a man inside.

Napanee OPP say the woman had dropped off her children at school on Friday morning and when she got home she found her home had been broken into…she found a man’s shoes and called police.  The man took off but was found a short distance from the home.

Tyler Lee is facing charges of break and enter, theft and two counts of failing to comply with a probation order.

 

Indecent Act – Gym

 

A 37 year old man from Belleville turned himself in at Kingston Police headquarters after a complaint about him performing an indecent act at a gym in Kingston.

Kingston Police say it happened in the sauna in the men’s change room at the fitness centre on August 21st.  Police say a man tried to ignore comments from the other man who followed him into the shower while he was masturbating.

The Belleville man turned himself in on Friday and has been charged with performing an indecent act.

 

Long Weekend – Police Stats

 

It was a busy long weekend writing up tickets for the OPP highway safety division based out of Napanee.  Officers patrolling highways in eastern Ontario over the Thanksgiving weekend issued a total of 529 tickets.

Five hundred of the tickets were for Speeding, Distracted Driving, not wearing Seat Belts and other Moving Violations.

Officers also laid charges for driving while suspended, possession of marijuana, driving while disqualified and two counts of breach of an undertaking.
