Police asked drivers to keep winter driving skills top of mind again today.

Drivers reported the 401 was ice covered between Napanee and Kingston and traffic was at a standstill in both directions for about half an hour this morning following several crashes.

The MTO says other highways in the area range from bare to snow covered with icy and snow packed sections.

Credit Union Robbery

Police are still searching for the man who robbed the Kingston Community Credit Union on Market Street in downtown Kingston.

A man told staff he had a firearm and took off with a quantity of cash.

The robbery took place at 11 yesterday morning.

A search of the area with a police tracking dog failed to find the man.

Sexual Assault and Assault

Kingston Police say a 22 year old man sexually assaulted his partner after a night of smoking pot and taking cocaine with a friend.

The man was arrested on Monday afternoon after complaints about a disturbance in a west end residence.

The man has been charged with assault, sexual assault, possession of cocaine and marijuana and possession of a prohibited weapon…a flick knife.

Bridge Design Contract

Kingston City Council has decided to go with the highest bidder for the design of the third crossing bridge…but it was far from unanimous.

Council put off making the decision for two weeks after questioning why staff was recommending a contract that was a million dollars higher than the lowest bid.

In the end…council voted 7-5 in favour accepting the $2.3 million dollar bid from J.L. Richards.

Councillors Mary Rita Holland, Rob Hutchison, Jeff McLaren, Jim Neill and Peter Stroud voted against awarding the contract to J.L. Richards.  Councillor Laura Turner was absent.

Rideaucrest – Daycare

The Allen Detweiler Nursery School will be moving in to Rideaucrest and the 20 children will have a chance to interact with seniors in the city operated residence.

City council has approved an agreement to give the day care a significantly reduced rate to lease an 18 hundred square foot space that’s been empty for over a year.

Thundersnow

It’s called “thundersnow”…thunder and lightning during a snow storm.

People reported hearing thunder and seeing lightning yesterday afternoon during whiteout conditions in the Odessa area.

Meteorologists say snowstorms and blizzards can often produce thunder and lightning, a phenomenon referred to as…thundersnow.
