Sandhill Road Fire

Fire has destroyed a home on Sandhill Road in Kingston.

The home off Hwy 15 across from Sandhill Church was fully engulfed in flames when Kingston Fire and Rescue arrived on the scene shortly after eight last night.

Nobody was injured in the fire and the cause hasn’t been determined.

There’s no dollar estimate on the damage but the home was destroyed.

Trailer Destroyed

The cause of a fire that destroyed a fifth-wheel trailer parked on a Middle Road property is under investigation.  The trailer went up in flames yesterday morning.

A man was able to get out of the trailer but suffered smoke inhalation

Firefighters were able to stop the flames from spreading to the surrounding property – but all that’s left of the trailer is a pile of rubble.

Another Fire

There’s another working fire in Kingston today.

Kingston Fire and Rescue was called to 3888 Woodburn Road shortly before six this morning for a working fire.

Kingston Police are also on the scene.

No other information is available at this time.

Explosive Device

An explosive device found in Odessa has been destroyed.

The OPP says it was contacted by a resident of Odessa who reported a friend had dropped off an item that turned out to be practice mortar round.

CFB Trenton’s explosives disposal unit removed the device and took it away for destruction.

Needle Disposal

Disposal containers for used needles have been installed in ten public locations in Kingston….mainly parks and at two spots along the K&P Trail.

The idea is to reduce the risk of needle poke injuries for people using the parks and trails.

The city is paying for the sharps kiosks and the Street Health Centre has assumed full responsibility for monitoring and emptying the bins.

The cost of handling the disposal is being covered by KFL&A Public Health.

KT – Expanded Service

Kingston Transit has announced it will be expanding its Sunday and Holiday service on all express routes and Routes 1, 7 and 15 starting on Sunday, Sept. 10.

The extended service on these routes will now match the current Saturday hours of service.  Kingston Transit says the extended Sunday service was a popular request from its riders.

Innovation Tour – Mayor Patterson

Kingston’s Mayor has launched what he’s calling…The Mayor’s Innovation Tour.

Mayor Bryan Patterson says he’s not just talking about technology.  He says he considers it any sort of new approach, tool or method that can add real value to a group of people or to society as a whole.

Paterson will be visiting local companies, public sector institutions, City departments and community agencies to learn more about innovation happening in Kingston and share what he learns with the community.

He’ll be sharing stories about the tour on his website.

Doggie Dip

If your dog likes swimming – the city is holding it first-ever Summers End Doggie Dip on Sunday, Sept. 17th at Tomlinson Aqua Park.

It’s the last day the pool will be in operation and dog owners have to register to take part.

Colleges – Support Staff Contract

Support staff at St. Lawrence College and the provinces 23 other colleges have a new four-year contract extension. The members of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union have voted 75 per cent in favour of the extension, which expires in August 2022.  The contract includes a 7.75 per cent wage increase over the four years along with upgrades in drug coverage, leave provisions and contracting-out language.

Pop Up Art

The city and Kingston Transit are looking for artists who want to put on pop up displays at bus stops and on Kingston Transit buses for Culture Days.

The Culture Days Pop Ups are aimed at showcasing a variety of arts and culture.

Kingston-based emerging and established artists and creators are encouraged to submit a proposal to the city no later than 12 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 8th.

Kitchens to Texas

Mobile Kitchens Canada of Inverary is sending several of its mobile kitchens to flooded area of Houston, Texas.

The kitchens will be used feed crews working to get oil refineries back in operation as well as rescue crews.

The company from Inverary has also supplied its mobile kitchens to help feed crews battling forest fires this summer in British Columbia.
