Correctional Workers

 

Correctional workers held an information picket outside Joyceville Institution and Collins Bay Institution this morning.  They’re demanding the government return to the bargaining table.  The workers have been without a contract for three years.

If the union representing elementary teachers in Ontario gets its way…the Limestone District School Board will be looking for a new name for Sir. John A. Macdonald Public School.

The Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario wants Macdonald’s name removed from schools in Ontario.

The teachers union has passed a resolution saying using his name for a school creates an unsafe environment for kids to learn in because Macdonald was responsible for residential schools in the 1800’s.

The Limestone District School Board admits Sir John A. Macdonald is a controversial figure and says it wants to discuss the issue with its provincial trustee’s organization and Indigenous leaders.

 

Robbery – Stabbing – Arrests

 

A mother and her son have been arrested for a robbery and stabbing on Conacher Drive last week and Kingston Police have issued an arrest warrant for a third person.

45 year old Kimberly Rose-Knapp and her son…26-year-old Dustin Rose on Tuesday at a home on Battersea Road.  A warrant has been issued for the arrest 37-year-old Gord Kevin Drysdale.

They all face numerous charges after an apartment at 300 Conacher Drive was broken into around 2:45 in the morning on August 15th.  The occupants were pepper sprayed and robbed and a man was repeatedly stabbed in the leg.

 

Limestone City Blues Festival

 

The Limestone City Blues Festival officially kicks off a weekend of music in Kingston tonight with a group called Blackburn.  The band from Toronto opens officially opens the festival in Confederation Park tonight.

The festival continues with afternoon shows in Confederation Park right through Sunday.

The Princess Street show takes place tomorrow night and the Saturday night show takes place in Springer Market Square.

RV Fire – Investigation

 

Fire has destroyed a recreational vehicle parked outside a newly built home on Accommodation Road in Kingston East.  The fire was reported at about 5:30 yesterday morning.

Firefighters found the large mobile home fully engulfed in flames when they arrived.

There’s nothing left but the frame and the cause of the first is under investigation.

Kingston Police were called to assist at the scene of the fire and say there is no evidence of arson.

 

Gananoque – Town Hall Expansion

 

Gananoque council has approved a massive expansion of its town hall.

Council has voted in favour of spending $3 million dollars to almost double the size of the current building.

The historic building is 185 year old and Mayor Erika Demchuk says it is unsafe for staff and the upgrades have to be done.

No date has been set for the beginning of construction.

 

St. Lawrence – New Manager

 

St. Lawrence College has hired its Sports Information officer as the new Manager of Athletics and Student Engagement at its campuses in Kingston, Brockville and Cornwall.

Kevin Biggs had been working as the sports information officer for the past five years after teaching in the Fitness & Health Promotion program.

Biggs says he’s looking forward to helping sports teams succeed and he’s excited about the opening of the new Student Life & Innovation Centre at the Kingston campus.
