Rescue – Driver in Elevator Bay

Two Queen’s University students have rescued an elderly woman who drove her vehicle into Elevator Bay.  It happened around 5:30 yesterday afternoon.

19 year old Sam Roe and 28 year old Josh Tobe were jogging on King Street West when the car went into the water.

They went into the water and pulled the woman to shore where she was treated by paramedics and taken to hospital as a precaution.   Police say she was not injured.

The vehicle was left in the water last night and was to be removed today.

Man In Well

A man is recovering after being rescued from a well on the Tyendinaga Territory.  Firefighters and police were called to the scene yesterday after the 52-year-old man fell through a narrow opening in the cover of the well.  There was about seven metres of water inside and the man was found on the surface, holding onto the edge. Firefighters removed the cover and pulled the man to safety.

He was taken to hospital in Napanee for treatment of minor injuries.

Elgin Break In – Charges

One man has been arrested and police are looking for another following a break in at Kenney’s Plumbing on Main Street in Elgin.

Thieves forced open a rear door of the business and removed numerous items including a boat motor, generator, welder, cash register and chain saw.

28 year old Joel Echlin of Lanark County has been charged with break, enter and theft.

Police are asking for help from the public in locating the other suspect – asking anyone with information to contact Leeds OPP or Crime Stoppers.

Fake U-S Cash

Napanee OPP is warning businesses about counterfeit American money being passed along the Highway 401 corridor.  The counterfeits have been in the $20 and $50 denominations.

Napanee OPP recovered $790 in counterfeit American currency in a vehicle stopped in Napanee on January 8th.

One adult and three young offenders from Mississauga face charges of possession of counterfeit currency and uttering counterfeit currency.

Healthy Kids

The KFL&A Healthy Kids Community Challenge kicks off during Feb Fest opening ceremonies at 12:15 today.  Kingston is getting $125,000 from the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care to fund the program over the next three years.

It promotes physical activity and healthy eating for children 12 years and under and their families.

Feb Fest

The weather this week hasn’t been much like winter at all…but Feb Fest kicks off today in Downtown Kingston.

The festival is centered around the skating rink in Springer Market Square and the opening ceremony is at 12:15 today.

Tonight the focus is on the Annual Carr-Harris Cup between Queen’s and the Royal Military College.  The game takes place at the Rogers K-Rock Centre.

Activities tomorrow include a demonstration of a European sport called Ice Stock from 5-6:30.

Organizers have cancelled the Winter Park area with the snow slide, maze and the Snow Sculpture competition because of the lack of snow.

Saturday is hockey day in Kingston with games in the morning and former Leaf great Ron Ellis will be signing autographs.  The Polar Plunge and the figure skating show are highlights on Sunday.

The Limestone City is ranked 7th on the Amazon.ca list of the top 20 most romantic cities in Canada this year.

Kingston was first in 2012.  Victoria, B.C. is number one this year.

The ranking is based on sales of romance novels, relationship book, romantic comedies, music and sexual wellness products.

Brash 87 – Dragons Den

The party went late after Jibin Joseph of Kingston and former NHL enforcer Donald Brashear got a deal on Dragons Den.  Joseph is marketing Brashear’s hockey sticks under the brand Brash 87.  The two are partners in the company.

The hockey sticks sell for about half the price of other brand name sticks.

Brashear and Joseph accepted a deal with three of the Dragons who will be investing half a million dollars in their company.
