Homeless Survey

A group of 80 volunteers spent last night counting the number of homeless people in Kingston.

The United Way organized the initiative and says it will take 4-6 weeks before the final numbers from the study are released.  It also surveyed shelters and agencies in Kingston.

The last survey in Kingston took place in 2013 and counted 106 homeless people.

Queen’s  – Revised Code of Conduct

Queen’s University’s revised student code of conduct says students are expected to foster mutual respect for the dignity, property, rights and well-being of others.

Queen’s is asking for feedback from the university community on the 12 page document that came out of consultations following homecoming last fall.

Inmate – Drugs

An inmate at Millhaven Maximum Security faces charges after correctional officers seize 6.2 grams of heroin and 16 grams of marijuana.

The correctional service says the inmate was busted trying to bring the drugs into the institution on Tuesday of last week and police have been notified.

Assault Charge

A 54 year old Kingston man faces charges after a confrontation with a former landlord.

Kingston Police say the landlord of an apartment on Concession Street was confronted at his place of business on outer Division Street around 7:15 last Friday night.

Police say a man pulled a ten foot piece of chain out of the storage compartment on his e-bike and began swinging it towards the other man – he eventually got on the e-bike and left.

Police arrested a man at a residence on Compton Street on Tuesday afternoon.

Domestic Violence

Another case of domestic violence in Kingston has resulted in charges of breach of probation, mischief and being unlawfully in a dwelling house.

Police say a 31 year old man broke into the home of his domestic partner on Patrick Street around 11 on Monday night.  A news release says the man destroyed a cordless phone, spit in the woman’s face and left the residence.  A search with a police tracking dog failed to find the man.

He was arrested when he showed up for an appointment with his probation officer on Tuesday.

Gananoque – Bust

Four people have been arrested in a drug bust in Gananoque.

Police executed a search warrant at a residence on Charles Street North and seized crystal meth, a small amount of pot, a 22 caliber handgun and collapsible baton.

A 22 year old man faces weapons charges along with charges for breach of probation and possession for the purpose of trafficking.

Police also arrested a 30-year-old man from Brockville wanted on an outstanding warrant…a 31-year-old Gananoque woman for six counts of failing to comply with the conditions of her recognizance and a 45-year-old Gananoque man wanted on an outstanding warrant for failing to appear for court.

Big Bang Nobel Prize Winner

Queen’s University’s Nobel Prize winning physicist has spent some time hanging out on the set of the CBS television show…The Big Bang Theory.

Professor emeritus Arthur McDonald is a big fan of the show and spent time on the Los Angeles set Tuesday night.  He got the invite from a former student he taught at Princeton who is the scientific advisor for the show.

McDonald says it has great comedy writers and the science the characters talk about is completely accurate.

SLC Student Top Marketer

A student at St. Lawrence College has been selected as the Marketing Student of the Years by the Canadian Association of Marketing Professionals.  William Etherington was selected in the organizations first national competition involving both college and university students.

The award comes with a $1,500 scholarship.

Etherington is a second year Business Administration Marketing student.  Shaylin Radford of St. Lawrence finished in the top five.

Old Timers Tournament

An “oldtimers” hockey tournament that has raised more than $200,000 for local charities is underway in Napanee.

The Terry Wright Memorial Tournament is held to remember players who have passed away.

Wright started the tournament in 1996.  It now honour 47 “oldtimers” – including the man who started it all.

The fun tournament has become a serious fundraiser.

It has given $100,000 to KGH Kids with Cancer…almost 92 thousand to the Kingston Foundation for Autism and 16,600 dollars to Lennox and Addington Hospice Napanee.

Tournament got underway yesterday in Napanee and wraps up Saturday.
