St. Lawrence River

A group called American Rivers says the St. Lawrence River is ninth on its top 10 list of the most endangered waterways in the United States.

The group wants Canada and the U-S to adopt the International Joint Commission’s 2014 recommendations to change the way dams are operated.  The plan recommended changing the way water levels are controlled so they are closer to their natural cycles.

Fire – Arrests

A man and woman face charges following a fire at a duplex on Bath Road in Kingston’s west-end early Saturday morning.  Fire broke out in one unit of the duplex and a nearby home was also broken into.

The fire caused damage estimated at $185,000.

Kingston Police arrested two people after stopping a vehicle in the area of Princess and Sydenham Streets around 3am yesterday.  They arrested a man hiding in the back of the vehicle and the driver.

35 year old Robert Eli VanHeddegen has been charged with arson endangering life, break and enter, and mischief.  34-year-old Jennifer L. Nolan…who is also known as Jennifer Kennedy…has been charged with obstructing police and possession of crystal meth and heroin.

Job Fair

There’s a job fair coming up tomorrow for the newest factory in Kingston.  Frulact is hiring and the ACFOMI Employment Service is hosting an information session tomorrow morning at 10 at KEDCO.

Job seekers are being asked to register with ACFOMI for the session and should have a resume for the information session tomorrow.

Military Exercise

A group of soldiers will be conducting an exercise in civil – military cooperation in the region from today and tomorrow.

Approximately 40 national and international officers and instructors from the Peace Support Training Centre in Kingston will be taking pictures and talking with residents of Greater Napanee, Gananoque, Perth and Central Frontenac Township.  Participants will be wearing military uniforms but will be travelling in civilian vehicles.

Student Volunteers

The United Way Volunteer Centre in Kingston wants high school students to take part in the Ontario Youth Volunteer Challenge this week.

It has set a goal of getting 3,000 youth to volunteer for a total of 15,000 hours this week.

It shouldn’t be hard to reach the goal…last year…3,390 students in the area took part in the challenge and racked up over 20,000 hours of volunteer work.

Their hours are tracked to their school’s student services department.

Student – Remix Winner

A student at KCVI will be heading to Vancouver this September after winning a 25 thousand dollar scholarship as first prize in a music remix competition.

Jack Marko won the scholarship to the Nimbus School of Recording and Media in Vancouver for his remix of a pop song called…Same Sea…by Canadian singer and songwriter “Lights”.
