OPSEU – ONA – Providence Care

Staff and nurses at St. Mary’s and Providence Care Mental Health Services have chosen the unions to represent them at Kingston’s new hospital.

Service and clerical staff have voted in favour of being represented by OPSEU – the Ontario Public Service Employees Union. They voted this week and rejected the Laborers International Union.

Nurses have chosen to be represented by the Ontario Nurses Association and not by OPSEU. It had represented nurses at the Mental Health Services site.

Voyeurism

A 59 year old man charged with voyeurism after a female referee was videotaped in the change room at the Invista Centre has two weeks to find a lawyer.

Michael Erler made his first court appearance yesterday and was told to get legal representation for his next appearance.

Erler was charged following the incident at the Invista Centre on February 29th.

Cab Driver Assault

Kingston Police hope witnesses to an unprovoked attack on a cab driver that left him with a broken arm will come forward. Police say the cab was in the drive-thru of the Burger King at Princess and Division Streets around 2am on Sunday, April 10th. A group of 8 to 10 people assaulted the driver and two occupants.

Police believe people in a black pickup truck behind the cab witnessed what happened and may have even intervened.

Anyone with information about the assault that took place almost two weeks ago is being asked to contact Kingston Police or Crime Stoppers.

Cataraqui Trail – Section Reopening

Repairs to the Cataraqui Trail following a major washout of the trail will result in a delay to some improvements planned for the trail this year.

The section of the trail between MacGillivray Road and Indian Lake Road is scheduled to re-open tomorrow.

Cataraqui Region Conservation Authority Lands Planner Jason Hynes, says an unfortunate and unforeseen by-product of the washout and subsequent repair was that some of the scheduled trail revitalization work set and budgeted for in 2016 will now have to be delayed.

Celebration – Accreditation

The Boys and Girls Club of Kingston and Area has been recognized for excellence in children’s recreation and sports programs.

It has been designated as a HIGH FIVE Accredited Organization with Parks and Recreation Ontario.

A celebration is taking place from 4-5pm today at its west end location in the Frontenac Mall.

Lyme Disease Symposium

Canada’s leading experts in Lyme Disease research are in Kingston for the Queen’s Lyme Disease Symposium. The symposium opened yesterday and is aimed at developing collaborative research and a better understanding of tick-borne illnesses.

One of many topics of discussion is creation of a National Lyme Disease Research Network.
