Drought Recovery

The Kingston area is well on its way to recovering from severe drought conditions during the summer.

Environment Canada recorded just under 62 millimeters of rain at the Norman Rogers Airport on Thursday and Friday of last week.  There was 22 millimetres of rain on Monday of last week.

The total of around 84 millimetres for last week is almost three and a half inches of rain.

Bike Path

The city’s plans to build a bike path and walking trail along Bath Road will be on display at an open house at Legion 631 in Collins Bay.  City staff and the project’s design consultants will be at the session from 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow.

The bike path and trail will be built along Bath Road from Collins Bay Road to Coverdale Drive.

Portions will be separated from traffic on the road by a raised concrete curb.

The Ontario government is covering half of the cost and has already donated the $268,500 for the project.

Pedophile – Back to Prison

A 35 year old pedophile is going back to prison after pleading guilty to violating conditions of a 10 year supervision order.

Christopher Goodwin had been living in a Kingston halfway house and was prohibited from possessing, accessing viewing and writing pornography…especially involving children or violence.

He was caught with pornography and a story he’d written and has been sentenced to three years and two months in prison.

Homecoming

It wrapped up just over a week ago and Kingston’s Police Chief says Homecoming at Queen’s was the best it has been in his four years in Kingston.

Chief Gilles Larochelle says there were fewer arrests and fewer charges during Homecoming when it wrapped up just over a week ago.

Larochelle told the Police Services Board last week – the ReUnion Street Festival was a big factor in drawing people away from Aberdeen Street.

Kingston Police estimate the cost for overtime during Homecoming was $59,000.

Queen’s has given the city $100,000 a year for three years to cover the cost of policing activities at the university.

United Way Campaign

The United Way campaign in Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington has raised just over $1.5 million dollars with just over a month left to go.  That’s 44% of the $3,451,000 goal.

The campaign is scheduled to wrap-up on November 30th.

It got a boost from several weekend events…including the Kingston Fire and Rescue Community Day and the United We Curl ‘funspiel’ at the Royal Kingston Curling Club.
