Buses – Roads – Sidewalks

It was a challenging morning commute for a lot of people in the region. Tri-Board Student Transportation announced school buses were running where possible. But there was a lengthy list of buses that were cancelled.

North of Kingston – secondary roads that were snow packed turned icy because of the rain. On top of that there was fog blanketing the area.

Student Transportation of Eastern Ontario has cancelled all school transportation for the Upper Canada District School Board and Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario due to treacherous road conditions across much of their region

Most roads in Kingston were cleared of the packed snow – but now there are large puddles everywhere and many sidewalks are glare ice and not passable.

 

401 Crash

The 401 has been re-opened to traffic after being closed in both direction between Gardiners Road and Wilton Road.

The highway was shut down at around 8:30 last night because of a natural gas leak coming from the truck that had jack knifed and gone off the highway earlier in the day.

The 401 was re-opened to traffic about four hours later.

 

Seizure of contraband – Joyceville Institution

The Correctional Service says officers at Joyceville Institution intercepted an inmate attempting to bring contraband into the institution.  The inmate was caught around 3:00 p.m.

The contraband included 12 grams of cannabis concentrate.

Police have been notified and the institution is investigating.

A news release says the Correctional Service is heightening measures to prevent contraband from entering its institutions in order to help ensure a safe and secure environment for everyone.

 

Girl Guides Award

The leader of the First Kingston Trex Unit of the Girl Guides has won a national award.

Pat Watson of Elgin will travel to Ottawa to receive the Experiences Canada Award at the Governor General’s History Awards on January 28th.

Watson is being recognized for planning an exchange with Girl Guides in Nova Scotia.

She has been a volunteer with Girl Guides for 37 years.

 

Soldier On Donation

The Soldier on Program has received a boost thanks to the efforts of the owner of the Canex Barber Shop at CFB Kingston.

Debbie Reed presented the program with $5,700 yesterday…the proceeds of a gift wrapping fundraiser and other fund raising activities last year.  Reed says her experience in Afghanistan in 2008 opened her eyes to what troops have to deal with on a daily basis and she gave credit for raising the money to other people who helped her by volunteering.
