Council – Parks and Neighbours

Kingston is considering a ‘good neighbour’ bylaw to regulate clearing snow and leaves.

City Council approved a motion from Councillor Jim Neill last night.

Neill proposed the bylaw after getting complaints about people blowing leaves and snow onto their neighbour’s property.  Kingston doesn’t have a bylaw regulating it and there is nothing it can do about these kind of neighbour disputes.  City staff will review what other municipalities do and draft a proposed bylaw.

City staff will also review Kingston’s policy on using parks for special events.

Council approved a motion from Councillor Peter Stroud last night.  Stroud is suggesting special events should be spread out at various parks in Kingston.  He says some parks are booked on most weekends in the summer and aren’t available for ordinary use by the public.

Horwath – Kingston Session

Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath heard a shopping list of problems with health care from people at a round table session in Kingston.

The Leader of the Official Opposition says it is estimated that 33 thousand people in the Kingston area do not have a family doctor.

She says Kingston General Hospital has been routinely operating at over 100 per cent capacity since 2012 and waiting times in the emergency room can be painfully long.

Horwath says it will only get worse with the current Doug Ford government already making cuts to health care and promised to fight further cutbacks.

Ford – Trenton

Ontario Premier Doug Ford will be in Trenton today to announce plans to support members of the military.  Ford is scheduled to make the announcement at 11 this morning at the National Air Force Museum in Trenton

Shooting – Charges

A 19 year old Kingston man is facing charges after shooting himself in the hand and telling police he’d been the victim of a robbery.  Police were called to Kingston General Hospital about a patient with a gunshot wound to his left hand on the night of October 18th.  Police determined there was no robbery and say the man accidentally shot himself in the hand at a friend’s apartment on Fraser Street.

He was arrested on November 1st and faces charges including breaching a court order prohibiting him for possessing weapons.

Aberdeen Assaults

Kingston Police are asking for information and video surveillance after four people were assaulted during Halloween partying on Aberdeen Street.

A man hit one person in the face at approximately 12:50 a.m. on Saturday…knocking him to the ground where he lay bleeding from a head injury and wasn’t moving. Three other people dressed in cow costumes who tried to help were also assaulted.

The suspect was dressed in black and took off north on Aberdeen Street and west on Johnson Street.

Anyone with information on the assault or with video surveillance showing what happened is being asked to contact Kingston Police.

Postmedia – No Monday Whig

It sounds like the beginning of the end for the print edition of the Kingston Whig Standard.

It is owned by Postmedia and the company has announced the Whig and the Belleville Intelligencer will no longer publish a hard copy of the newspaper on Mondays…effective November 19th.

Luck of Lottery

Another day…another story about a lottery winner in Kingston.

Ethel Crawford has claimed the $100,000 prize in the Instant Bingo Doubler game.

She bought the ticket at the CNIB lottery kiosk in the Walmart on Midland Avenue.

Pewter Collectables

The popular Downtown Kingston Christmas ornaments will go on sale on Monday, November 19th.

City council got a preview last night.  The collection this year includes Bearance’s Grocery.  2018 is the 25th anniversary of the Pewter Collection.
