Power Outage

Close to 11 thousand Hydro One customers north of Kingston were left in the dark this morning due to a widespread power outage.

The Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board says St. Patrick Catholic School in Harrowsmith and St. James Major in Sharbot Lake are both closed due to the power failure.

The Limestone District School Board says its schools north of Kingston will be open today despite the power being off this morning.

Vigil – Pittsburgh Shootings

Confederation Park in downtown Kingston was filled with community members for a vigil to honour the 11 victims of Saturday’s attack on the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh.

The vigil started at 5 p.m. and speakers included Rabbi Erin Polansky of Kingston’s Beth Israel Synagogue, leaders of other faiths in the area.

A letter to the community from 26 leaders of a variety of faiths says thoughts and prayers are not enough.  It says we hope we can all work together for peace and safety.

Handguns – Two Charged

A 26 year old Kingston man and a 25 year old Kingston woman are facing charges after two 9mm pistols were seized by the Canada Border Service at the International Mail Processing Centre in Toronto on October 18th.

The pistols are designed as movie props – but are illegal in Canada because they can be converted for use with live ammunition.

A search warrant executed in Kingston uncovered more firearms, cocaine, methamphetamine and prescription opioids.  Another resident of the home that was searched has been charged with drug trafficking.

Bernardo – Parole

The Parole Board has released its reasons for denying parole to murderer and rapist Paul Bernardo.  It says it was because he resorted to blaming his sadistic behaviour on an anxiety disorder and low self-esteem.

He was denied parole during his hearing two weeks ago at Millhaven Institution.

Halloween – Police

Kingston Police are reminding people about safety tonight as children head out to Trick or Treat.

Police say children should avoid houses that aren’t well lit…ever go inside a stranger’s home…avoid running back and forth across streets…and save their treats until they get home so parents can check them to make sure everything is okay.
