Helicopters – Military Training

Military helicopters will be buzzing around Kingston today during a military training exercise in the area of Lake Ontario Park.

The Canadian Armed Forces says the training will take place at the former Rockwood Asylum on the Kingston waterfront…but no specific times have been released.  The military says there will be lots of noise and low level flights by helicopters during the exercise.

People are being asked to avoid the area while the military conducts the training today.

 

St. Lawrence College – Anonymous Donor

An anonymous donor is challenging people to raise $250,000 for the St. Lawrence College Uncommon Campaign.  The college says the donor will match the amount with a $250,000 donation of their own.  The campaign is a million dollars shy of its $11.5 million dollar goal.

The Challenge will run until the end of April…and the college says it hopes to have reached its goal by that time.

 

Drug Bust

A 19 year old from Kingston is facing drug trafficking charges after police stopped a vehicle on Bath Road at Palace Road on the night of September 27th.  Police say there was a strong smell of marijuana in the vehicle and all three people in the vehicle were arrested.  A search of a backpack turned up hundreds of small empty blue bags, digital scales, 255 grams of marijuana, over 30 grams of cocaine, and just over $3000 in cash.

The 19 year old faces two counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking, and possession of property obtained by crime.

 

Home Security

Score one for the home security system.

Kingston Police say a person who was at work got a home security alert on his cell phone on Monday morning and video surveillance showed a man trying to break into his home through a kitchen window.  He contact police and they arrested a man in the backyard of the west end home.

The 45 year old Kingston man has been charged with break and enter.

 

Theft – Prince Edward County

The OPP in Prince Edward County is hoping someone can help identify thieves who stole $20,000 worth of items from a home under construction on Foster Road.

Thieves stole tools, a furnace, HRV system and generation along with light fixtures and drills some between Thursday, September 20th at 2pm and Friday September 21st at 5pm.

Police believe the thieves used a red or maroon Dodge Ram pickup with a galvanized trailer.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is being asked to call the OPP or Crime Stoppers.

 

Student – Part-time Jobs

Kingston police is offering young people between 15 and 18 years old part-time work in their Youth In Policing Initiative program.

Participants work for 10 hours a week with the police.  Applications are available at police headquarters or through the Kingston Police website.

The application deadline is October 23rd.

Ford – Workers Rights

Ontario Premier Doug Ford has already announced there won’t be an increase in the minimum wage to $15 an hour.  Now the Premier is vowing to scrap labour reform legislation from the previous Liberal government that introduced a wide range of worker protections….including guarantees on vacation time and sick leave.  Economic Development Minister Jim Wilson says changes will be made to the legislation following extensive consultation.

 

North Kings Town

There is a Talking Circle this morning and two open houses and workshops today to discuss the initial findings from the North King’s Town project.

You can find out the latest on the draft reports on land use, transportation and cultural heritage at the sessions.

The Talking Circle takes place starting at 11 this morning at the Kingston Community Health Centre on Weller Avenue.  The open houses and workshops take place at the Branch 560 Legion on Montreal Street starting at 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.

 

Queen’s – Green Economy Program

Queen’s University has signed on to Sustainable Kingston’s Green Economy Program.

The university says it is committed to creating a culture of sustainability.  The university has also announced the establishment of the Queen’s Sustainability Working Group.  A news release says it will provide strategic direction and recommendations on sustainability goals and the carbon reductions targeted by the Queen’s University Climate Action Plan.
