Montreal Street Fire

A fire on Montreal Street caused half a million dollars damage this morning and led to traffic chaos.  Montreal Street remained closed from Hickson Avenue to Railway Street through the morning rush hour.

Flames were coming from the roof of the multi-unit residential building in the 700 block of Montreal Street when fire crews arrived on the scene.

Crews from three stations fought the blaze and got the fire extinguished – but not before significant damage to the entire building.  A news release says the cause may be due to a candle left burning in one of the apartment units.

All of the occupants of the apartments were accounted for and nobody was injured.

Fire – Princess Street

Damage was limited to about $7,000 after fire broke out in the basement apartment of a house in the 600 block of Princess Street on Sunday.  The tenant of the apartment says they lost everything in the fire.

Kingston Fire and Rescue says it was called to the fire at 1:30 yesterday afternoon.  Firefighters were able to quickly knock down the fire and spent about an hour ventilating smoke from the building.

New Fireboat

Kingston Fire and Rescue could have a new fireboat in the near future.

Kingston City Council is expected to approve spending $600,000 to replace the T.H. Patterson.

It’s 36 years old and has reached the end of its life.

Metalcraft Marine of Kingston was the only company to respond to a request for proposals from Kingston Fire and Rescue.  It has submitted a price of $600,000 for a FireStorm 40 model…a significant discount for Kingston.

Excellence in Teaching

A teacher at Napanee District Secondary School has been selected as one of 25 finalists for the Governor General’s History Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Karen Randall teaches Native Studies and was responsible for students working with Indigenous artists on a series of art panels for a unique Medicine Wheel.  It is installed in the library at the high school in Napanee.

Randall received a notice from the Governor Generals office last week congratulating her on a significant achievement.  The letter says it is a testament to your exceptional work in the classroom.

The six recipients of the award will be announced by the end of August.
