Suspicious Man – Update

Kingston Police say a man seen in Westbrook last Wednesday is not the man who has been approaching young children.  A news release says the male has been identified and investigators have no reason to believe he is the suspect that has been approaching children.

Police had issued a request for help in identifying the man seen smoking near W.J. Holsgrove Public School last week.

Robbery – Napanee

A suspect in the robbery of a Napanee gas station early Tuesday morning has been arrested in Belleville.

The Pioneer gas bar on Centre Street South in Napanee was robbed by a man who left in a black Chevy Cruz.  Police say he got a quantity of cash after demanding money and pointed an aerosol can – possibly bear spray – at the attendant.

Senate – Cannabis

You’ll be able to legally purchase and consume recreational marijuana, probably by mid-September, now that the Senate has passed the Trudeau government’s bill to legalize cannabis.

The bill passed easily last night and includes an provision to allow people to grow their own…but you probably won’t be able to buy pot at the Ontario Cannabis Store in Kingston until September as the province sets up the system to distribute and sell recreational marijuana.

Green Rebates Cancelled

If you had plans to do some energy saving renovations…rebate programs for energy-efficient renovations have been cancelled by Ontario’s newly elected government.  The programs include rebates for insulation, windows, solar, ground source heat pumps and smart thermostats for homes.  The rebate programs were funded with proceeds from Ontario’s cap-and-trade program through a provincial agency called the Green Ontario Fund.  Work already booked has to be completed by the end of August and the application has to be submitted by September 30th.

Premier designate Doug Ford has said getting rid of cap-and-trade would be his first order of business once the legislature resumes.

Kingston and the Islands newly elected NDP representative at Queen’s Park…Ian Arthur…tweeted…I can’t believe that cancelling a program aimed entirely at energy efficiency is considered finding an ‘efficiency’ in government.

Tozer – Donation

The University Hospitals Kingston Foundation and the Division of Neurosurgery at Kingston General are thanking a Kingston woman for her fund raising efforts.

Kyla Tozer presented a cheque for $31,100 to the foundation yesterday.

Tozer is paying it forward after successful surgery at KGH to remove a brain tumor almost ten years ago.

The money was raised by over 600 participants in her second annual Chase a Dream Neuro Run.

The first Chase a Dream event raised more than $28,000.
