401 Crash

 

There’s no word yet from the OPP on whether the driver of a transport truck faces charges after a crash on the 401 westbound in the Switzerville Road area that created major traffic delays.

The truck hit a concrete barrier at a construction site early yesterday morning.  One westbound lane on the 401 was closed until last night for the cleanup creating lengthy traffic delays yesterday.

 

Prison Lockdown

 

The assessment unit at Joyceville Institution is under a lockdown.

The lockdown was ordered yesterday to allow for staff to conduct an exceptional search.

The Correctional Service says the search is being done to ensure the safety and security of the institution, staff and inmates.

 

Domestic Violence

 

Kingston Police have charged a 43 year old man in a brutal case of domestic violence.

Police began their investigation on April 13th when a man threatened to kill a woman with a knife over her Facebook profile. Someone intervened and when police arrived the man fled.

Police say the woman suffered multiple violent attacks in March and April.  The 43 year old man was arrested with the help of attorneys for domestic violence cases on Wednesday and faces charges including assault, sexual assault, uttering threats to cause death and breach of probation.

 

Watertown – Kingston Delegation

 

Watertown, New York is hoping to take some ideas from Kingston to revitalize its downtown.

Representatives from an organization called Advantage Watertown spent yesterday in Kingston talking with the Downtown Kingston Business Association.

 

Grow a Row

 

Kingston’s health food agency Loving Spoonful kicks off the Grow a Row program at Kingston’s Farmers Markets this weekend.  People are encouraged to grow a row of produce to donate to the program.

Last year farmers and gardeners provided 23,000 pounds of fresh produce to more than 40 shelters, meal programs and social service agencies.

Grow a Row will have its kickoff in Springer Market Square tomorrow afternoon and at the Memorial Centre Market on Sunday.

 

Pool Open

 

The water may be a bit chilly – but if the weather cooperates this weekend you’ll be able to take a dip in the pool at the Memorial Centre.

Tomlinson Aqua Park is scheduled to open for swimming from 11:30 to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Weekend Activities

 

Lots of activities are taking place in Kingston this weekend including the 4th annual walk for Kids Mental Health starts from McBurney Park at 10:15 tomorrow morning

 

The Kids, Cops and Canadian Tire Fishing Derby is on tomorrow at the public dock in Seeley’s Bay.   The event runs from 8:00 am until 11:00 am.  The host of the event for kids from 7 to 14 is Just Fishing’s “Big” Jim MacLaughlin.

 

Beat Beethoven takes place at Confederation Park on Sunday.  The goal for the 22nd annual fund raising event for the Kingston Symphony is 22 thousand dollars.  New this year is a 1 k run for children ten and under.

 

The First Annual Canadian Walk for Veterans hits the ground on Sunday at Rideau Acres Campground.  Eight cities, including Kingston, are taking part in the walk this year.  Veterans, Members of the Armed Forces and anyone who supports the military is being encouraged to take part.

Kingston Penitentiary opened on this day, June 1st, 1835.

When it opened there were only six inmates and they were brought to Kingston from York…which is now Toronto…on a steam ship called…‘Great Britain’.
