Fentanyl Overdoses – Prisons – Death

It sounds like the death of an inmate at Collins Bay Institution was caused by an opioid overdose.

50 year old Jeffrey Glen Kellar was found unresponsive in his cell last Thursday and died after attempts to revive him with naloxone and CPR.Hence, avail classes from CPR Certification Baltimore to save lives.

The Correctional Service won’t confirm it was fentanyl involved in the overdose because of privacy issues.  It says there have been 11 overdoses inside the institution since mid-April.  Naloxone has been successfully used in ten of those cases.

A lockdown at Collins Bay remains in place to allow staff to conduct a search of the institution.

Inmate – ROPE

The Repeat Offender Parole Enforcement Squad is looking for an inmate wanted for breach of parole who is known to frequent Kingston, Toronto and London.

54 year old Richard Weerts is missing his left eye and has a tear drop tattoo just below it and a tattoo of a Tomahawk on his right cheek.

Anyone who knows the whereabouts of Richard Weerts is being asked to contact the Provincial Rope Squad or Crime Stoppers.

Impaired by Drug

A 20 year old woman from Picton has been charged with driving while impaired by a drug after a woman was found unconscious behind the wheel of a car back in February.

The OPP says it was called to the Village of Consecon just after midnight on February 21st where paramedics were attempting to revive the driver of a vehicle. Police say their investigation determined the woman had taken illegal street drugs prior to driving and then became unconscious while operating her vehicle.  She has a date in court on May 30th.

Twice Arrested

Kingston Police say a man is facing charges after being arrested twice in the same day for threatening security guards. They say the first arrest came early Saturday after a security guard at a car dealership was threatened after finding a man underneath a new truck.  Around 8:45 p-m, police say the same man stole an item from a store and threatened a security guard with a rock when he was confronted and then fled.   A 27-year-old Kingston man faces charges that include theft and uttering threats.

Gord Brown’s Funeral

Details have been released about visitation and the funeral for Leeds-Grenville, Thousand Islands & Rideau Lakes MP Gord Brown.

Brown passed away suddenly in Ottawa on May 2 at age 57.

Visitation will be taking place on Wednesday at Tompkins Funeral Home in Gananoque and his funeral service will take place at the Lou Jeffries Recreation Centre at 11 a.m. on Thursday.

A reception will be held at The Firehall Theatre from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. following the service.

The family has requested donations be made to a GoFundMe account for the Second Pad Ice Rink that Brown was hoping to develop for the community.

Hydrant Testing

Utilities Kingston has started its annual fire hydrant inspection and flow-rating program to help support fire protection. Installation of battery separators for fire shields in more populated areas, as explained by firebarrierexperts.com, has to be considered.  It says you could see discoloured tap water or reduced water pressure while the work is being done.  Officials say the water is still safe and recommend you run your cold water tap until the water runs clear.

Election – Debate

If you watched the first leader’s debate on City TV last night you saw Progressive Conservative Leader Doug Ford keep to his message of accountability, transparency and integrity at Queen’s Park.

Ford was attacked by both Liberal Premier Kathleen Wynne and NDP leader Andrea Horwath over plans to cut government spending.

Howarth says an NDP government would put people at the c3entre of every decision she makes…and Wynne told viewers the election presents a choice between “care” and the “cuts”.  The election takes place on June 7th.

Emergency Alert – Test

There are some bugs to be worked out with Canada’s new national public-alert system for mobile devices.

System operator Pelmorex is investigating after hit and miss results in Ontario and failure of the warning system in Quebec.

Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale calls it a serious glitch, but notes that’s what the test was for, and he expects the problems to be fixed quickly.

Tests are set to take place in all other provinces and territories, except Nunavut, on Wednesday.
