Eclipse

A special viewing event is set to take place in Kingston today for the solar eclipse.

All of North America will get at least a partial eclipse of the sun today.

About 70% of the sun will be blocked out by the moon in the Kingston area this afternoon.

The Royal Astronomical Society of Canada Kingston Centre as well as members of the Queen’s and RMC Astronomy and Astrophysics groups are holding a viewing party in Confederation Park.

There’ll be special glasses and solar telescopes at the free event to view the eclipse.

The peak of the eclipse will be at 2:36 p.m. in Kingston.

Viewers are reminded to wear special eclipse glasses to prevent serious eye damage.

Regatta Fatal – Rideau Ferry

An American man has died after crashing his speedboat during a race in Rideau Ferry…north of Kingston.

Provincial police say the boat was competing in the Rideau Ferry Regatta Saturday when it became airborne and the operator was ejected.  A 69-year old man from Lakeville, Minnesota died shortly after being taken to hospital.

Drug Bust – Ride Program

A RIDE Program set up by Napanee OPP has resulted in a drug bust involving 40 pounds of marijuana and an ounce of cocaine.

Police stopped a small sedan no the off ramp at the 401 and Highway 33 in Quinte West on Friday night and seized the drugs along with a thousand dollars cash.

A 22 year old woman from Petawawa has been charged with possession and possession for the purpose of trafficking as well as breaching conditions of probation and bail.

A 29 year old man from Scarborough is also facing charges.

Anti-Fascism Rally

Over a hundred people gathered in Springer Market Square on Saturday to protest fascism and hate.

It was one of many rallies taking place across Canada and the U.S. after the violence that took place in Charlottesville, Virginia last week.

The group in Kingston marched along King Street to Princess Street and then walked up Princess Street to McBurney Park for a community forum.

Swim for Kids

The first Swim for Kids fund raising event in Kingston was a big success.

88 swimmer took to Lake Ontario on Saturday to swim 1.5 or 3 km in support of The Y Penguins and Easter Seals Ontario.

The swim took place at Richardson Beach in Kingston and raised $27, 551 in support of programs for children and youth with physical disabilities.
