Third Crossing

There’s more ammunition for those in favour of the Third Crossing.

An information report for Kingston City Council says the LaSalle Causeway could be closed more often as the federal government tries to maintain the aging lift bridge.

The report says it could be closed overnight or during the daytime for periods of 24 to 48 hours and the closures could last over periods of three to 15 days.

Mayor Bryan Paterson says he feels it is another reason why the city needs to build a bridge over the Cataraqui River.

High Water

Water levels have continued to rise on Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River in the past few days.

It not only means an increased threat of flooding along the shoreline…it’s also going to affect some things over the long weekend.

The Glenora Ferry will continue to operate with limited service because of the high water level.

The ferry will not be taking large trucks, RV or trailers.  Only cars, SUVs and 1/2 ton pickups are being allowed.

Thousand Islands National Park opens for the season on Friday and says several campsites and docks won’t be available for use.  It says the water level on the St. Lawrence River is three feet higher than normal.

Voting – Countryside

The city says online voting was more popular than voting in person during the byelection in Countryside district.

54% voted online…46% in person.

The city issued a news release yesterday saying the number of electors in Countryside who voted by Internet increased by almost 20 per cent over 2014.

Gary Oosterhof was the winner with 598 votes…10 more than Louis Cyr.

Oosterhof will officially take his seat for the first time at the June 6th City Council meeting.

Waterkeepers – Wolfe Island

The influential environmental group Waterkeepers says its vision for a swimmable, drinkable, fishable Lake Ontario began on Wolfe Island 16 years ago.

Waterkeepers has announced it will be presenting the Wolfe Island Culture Festival from June 23rd to August 12th.  It will kick off with the Wolfe Island Festival of the Arts on Friday, June 23rd and wrap up in August with the return of the Wolfe Island Music Festival.

Waterkeepers says the full festival program will be announced at the festival launch on June 23rd.

Fire – Fraser Street

Fire has caused an estimated $9,000 damage to a unit in the 100 block of Fraser Street.  Fire was found between the basement and first floor and was quickly put out around 1:30 yesterday afternoon.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

No injuries were reported.

Chase – Police – Public Help

Kingston Police are hoping the public can help identify a man who nearly collided with a police cruise and drove through a park two and a half weeks ago.

Police say a vehicle ran the stop sign at Division and Elm Streets around 3:00 p.m. on May 1st and nearly collided with a police cruiser.

The vehicle was tracked to Mack Street where citizens reported it had gone through stop signs and was driven through the park at Mack and Alamein Streets.  The vehicle hit a light post on the pedestrian walkway between Alamein and Westdale Avenue and the driver was last seen running west towards Sir John A. Macdonald Boulevard.

Anyone with information about the incident is being asked to contact Kingston Police or Crime Stoppers.

Police have posted pictures of the suspect and the vehicle on their website and social media pages.
