Welcome to spring.

The Vernal Equinox officially began at 6:29 this morning as the sun entered the sign of Aries.

Environment Canada says it will feel like spring today and tomorrow with highs of plus 4 and plus 5…but the temperature is expected to plunge to minus 13 tomorrow night with a high on Wednesday of just minus 4.  Then it’s back to milder weather with daytime temperatures above freezing to finish out the week.

Bomb Threats

Two bomb threats disrupted a busy time in the Hub on Friday night and Kingston Police say whoever was responsible will face criminal charges.  Police responded to two bomb threat calls between midnight Friday and 2:00 a.m. Saturday.

The threats involved two establishments in the area of Princess and Division Streets.

The area was shut down until police determined the threats were not credible.

Brass Bandit

The man who sold a brass statue stolen from the Hospice Kingston Garden in City Park and three historic plaques to a scrapyard has been sent to jail.

50 year old Michael J. Barry pleaded guilty to possession of the stolen items after they were found at ANS Scrap Metal.

Barry has been sentenced to 204 days in jail on top of the 107 days he has already spent behind bars.

The items were found at ANS Scrap metal.

Blue Jays Bandit Sentenced

A spree of eight bank robberies that began in Kingston and ended with the arrest of the robber at a service centre on the 401 west of Trenton has resulted in a prison sentence of four years.

30 year old Tristan Marois Drouin of Gatineau, Quebec pleaded guilty to robbing the banks in a Belleville courtroom on Friday.

The robberies took place in Kingston, Napanee, Trenton, Richmond Hill, Toronto, Oshawa, Bowmanville and Cobourg.

Hero of the Year – Nominations

Two Kingston Police officers have been nominated for the Police Association of Ontario’s Police Services Hero of the Year Awards.

Staff Sergeant Jody Armstrong and Constable Jeff Dickson are among over 100 members of municipal police forces who have been nominated for their work in the community.

Armstrong was nominated for his work with the Special Olympics and many community events.

Dickson was nominated for his work with his canine partner Zeus on the job and in schools.

The awards will be presented in May.
