Storm Fall Out

 

High winds have caused some power failures in the Kingston area.

Utilities Kingston says crews are working to restore power.

Hydro One is working to restore power in other areas….including Wolfe Island.

Sacred Heart Catholic School is closed because it has no power.

Most school buses were running this morning in the Kingston area.

The Howe Island Ferry was taken out of service due to high winds overnight…It’s Twitter Account says it is still out of service this morning.

 

Parking

 

A new parking garage is in the works for downtown Kingston.

City Council has approved spending a million dollars to do the studies and design work for the parking garage at 169 Queen Street…near the intersection of Montreal Street.  Chief Administrative Officer Gerard Hunt told city council last night a feasibility study has already been completed.

 

Internet Predator – Conditions

 

Kingston internet predator Mark Bedford has been placed under a special public safety peace bond.

He won’t be allowed to own or access a computer, camera or cellphone for the next 18 months.  Those are among the 18 conditions Bedford has to live under.

A Kingston psychologist testified Bedford is a pedophile and at a high risk to re-offend.

 

Invista

 

Invista says nobody was injured when chemical vapors was released at its nylon plant on Front Road in Kingston.  A news release says the problem was quickly resolved.

Kingston Fire and Rescue’s hazardous materials team was called in to support the efforts of Invista’s emergency response personnel.

 

Labs Open

 

St. Lawrence College will be celebrating the official opening of its new Clinical Simulation Lab today.  The college’s lab space was recently rebuilt and modernized.  It will be used for advance technical training of students.

The college says it will also be working with community health care agencies to provide training for them in the new simulation labs.

 

Sir John A Day

 

From Tony’s today in history file…Happy birthday to Canada’s first prime minister and the Member of Parliament for Kingston.

It’s Sir John A. Macdonald Day…The day Kingston and Canada celebrates the birth of Sir John A. Macdonald.  Macdonald was actually born on January 10th, 1815…but his birth was registered on January 11th.

 

Model Parliament

 

More than 300 Queen’s University students are spending three days in Ottawa for Canada’s oldest and largest model parliament.  The Queen’s Model Parliament is marking its 70th anniversary.  It features undergraduate students from a variety of faculties sitting as Members of Parliament. Over the course of the three-day conference, the students will take over the House of Commons where they will debate a variety of bills.

 

Housing Starts

 

The Kingston region saw a boost in housing starts in December.

Canada Mortgage and Housing reports 534 units were under construction in December, up from 403 in November.

It says more row homes were being built and that offset fewer single-detached homes.

CMHC says housing starts in Kingston declined by 37% last year compared to 2015…and that was due to almost no apartments under construction last year.
