Weekend Weather

It is bitterly cold today – but it won’t last long according to the forecast from Environment Canada.  The forecast calls for snow to begin early this evening with 5 cm tonight…another 5 cm tomorrow before it changes to rain or freezing rain with a high of plus 1 on Saturday.

Napanee – Baby Injured

Napanee OPP have charged an 18 year old man from Napanee after a baby suffered life life-threatening injuries.  Police were called to a residence on Centre Street in Napanee around 3:40 Sunday morning.  The infant was rushed to the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario in Ottawa.  The 18 year old man has been charged with aggravated assault, criminal negligence causing bodily harm and failing to provide necessities of life.

Picton – Assault Children

A man from Picton has been charged with assault after a teacher reported bruises on a 4 year old student to the Children’s Aid Society.

The OPP arrested a 38 year old man at a home in Hallowell on Tuesday after speaking with the 4 year old and an eight year old.  Their mother’s boyfriend has been charged with two counts of assault.

He’s been released on bail with conditions he have no contact with the children.  He is scheduled to appear in Picton court on January 4th.

Prison Beatings – Sapers

Canada’s ombudsman for federal prisoners is calling on the Liberal government to act on promised reforms that will reduce violence in the nation’s prisons.  Howard Sapers is preparing to retired from his job as the Correctional Investigator of Canada.  Sapers says after almost 13 years he sees a harsher prison environment that is harming inmates and correctional officers. Figures from his office document a 93 per cent increase in assaults committed by inmates against other inmates since 2006.

This comes after a riot involving 185 prisoners at the Saskatchewan Penitentiary in Prince Albert that left one inmate dead and eight others injured.  The riot that started on Wednesday has left a large part of the prison uninhabitable.

Kettle Campaign

Kingston’s mayor, former mayors, military personnel, business and community leaders will be helping the Salvation Army’s Christmas Kettle Campaign today.

They’ll be encouraging people to put some cash into the red kettles during the Salvation Army Community Leader’s Day.  The campaign has raised less than 40% of $290,000 goal and it has only a week to go.

Frontenacs – Thompson Family

The Kingston Frontenacs will be raising money for the Thompson family during their games this weekend.  41 year old Christine Thompson died after being hit by a vehicle last week.

The team will be auctioning off autographed Roland McKeown 2014-15 Game Worn Captain Jersey tonight and on Saturday it will raffle the autographed 2015 Doug Gilmour Pink in the Rink Jersey.

Proceeds will go to the fund Home Depot has set up for Christine Thompson’s family.

Kids for Kids – Christmas Lunch

The annual Kids for Kids Christmas for Teens has raised about $18,000.

Proceeds from the event yesterday at the Colonnade Golf and Country Club benefit the Boys and Girls Club and the Jump Start program.
