KEDCO Review – Town Hall & Other News

The public will have an opportunity to discuss the future of economic development during a unique town hall meeting hosted by the Kingston Economic Development Corporation Review Committee this afternoon.

The meeting at the Donald Gordon Centre starting at 1 p.m.  will include break-out sessions lead by expert facilitator Eric Lockhart.  Lockhart is associate director of the Executive Decision Centre at the Queen’s Smith School of Business.

The KEDCO Review committee has lost a member.

Bo Wandschneider has resigned saying he doesn’t have the time required to volunteer on the committee.

And…the group, Friends of Kingston, has hired a lawyer to try to get the financial statements of KEDCO from the past five years.

WI Music Festival Cancelled

A popular music festival on Wolfe Island is taking this summer off – but hopes to return next year.

The Wolfe Island Music Festival made the announcement on its Facebook page yesterday.

Organizer Virginia Clark noted the festival suffered last summer because the Wolfe Island Ferry was in dry dock and people had to get to the Island on a smaller ferry.  Her message also says there was an overabundance of festivals in the area last summer.  Clark says they decided to take this summer off and hope to bring back the Wolfe Island Music Festival in 2017.

Sentencing – Police Standoff

A 40 year old Kingston man who wheeled a cart load of items out of Walmart and led police on a lengthy chase on foot earlier this month has been sentenced to two years of probation.

Kevin Hart has also been banned from possession of firearms and other weapons.

He pleaded guilty to theft and possession of a weapon and was given credit for 14 days he has spent in custody since being arrested on March 2nd.

Hart had pulled a knife and confronted police when he was corned behind the Royale Place Retirement Residence.

Stabbing – Arrest

A 54 year old Kingston man has been charged with stabbing a man at a west end billiard hall.

A 47 year old man was stabbed in the chest at around 10:40 p.m. Friday outside KT Billiards and Sports Lounge on Princess Street.  The man was treated and released from hospital.

Police arrested a man getting out of a taxi at a Notch Hill Road address.

Hugh Parks has been charged with assault with a weapon, possession of a dangerous weapon, carrying a concealed weapon and four counts of breach of recognizance.

Domestic Violence

A 23 year old Kingston man is facing numerous charges after a woman was shot multiple times with a pellet gun, punched in the head and threatened with death.

Police say the 22 year old victim suffered welts and bruising in separate assaults on March 15th and 16th.  Police issued a warrant for the arrest of the man and say he turned himself in on Sunday.

He has been charged with assault with a weapon, possession of a dangerous weapon, two counts of assault and Uttering threats to cause death.

Dumb Criminal

The dumb criminal of the week award goes to this 46 year old man who stole a bicycle after being released by Kingston Police.

Police say it happened yesterday around 10:30 in the morning and the man was observed by detective stealing the bike in plain view of police headquarters.

The man had been arrested on the weekend in relation to a theft earlier in the month.

He’s now facing further charges of theft, breach of probation and breach of an undertaking.
