Murder – Two Arrested

It sounds like the key piece of evidence was two black balaclavas after two men were arrested on charges of murdering 36 year old Mark Seymour in Kingston on September 28th.

Police found the two balaclavas near the murder scene at York and Division Streets.  They’re only sold at Dollarama and police are thanking the store for isolating the exact purchase.  They also say DNA evidence was found on the balaclavas.

26 year old Shawn Brown and 30 year old Derrick Blackett were arrested on Friday in Kingston.

They’re being held at the Quinte Detention Centre on charges of First Degree Murder, Forcible Confinement, Weapons Dangerous, Break and Enter, and Wearing a Disguise.

They have also been charged with robbery and forcible confinement of a 50-year-old man who was present at the time Seymour was murdered.

Crash

A 26 year old man has been charged with impaired driving after a crash early Saturday morning sent an elderly man from Amherstview to hospital with life threatening injuries.

The OPP says a pickup truck went through a red light on Bath Road at Sherwood Avenue and hit a van around 5 a.m. Saturday.  The pickup rolled over the embankment on Bath Road.

The 71 year old driver of the van was taken to Kingston General Hospital with life threatening injuries.

Christopher Jones of Rear Yonge-Escott Township has a court date in Napanee on December 29th.

Impaired by Drug

A 23 year old man from Kingston has been charged with being impaired by a drug while driving on the 401 eastbound in Loyalist Township.

Loyalist OPP stopped a car last Thursday after reports it was being driven all over the road.  The officer administered a field sobriety test and determined the man was impaired by a drug.

Jason Martini has a date in court in Napanee on February 16th.

KMFRC

The new executive director of the Kingston Military Family Resource Centre is no stranger to the organization.  Colleen Fairholme has been employed at the centre for five years as its director of services and was most recently the acting executive director.

Garage Fire

Damage is estimated at $20,000 after fire destroyed a garage and its contents in the 2500 block of Highway 15.

Firefighters kept the flames from spreading to the house last night.

A firefighter was treated at the scene by paramedics for a minor burn.

A garage in the 5000 block of Highway 15 was destroyed by a fire late Saturday night.

Prelim Design – Bridge

Kingston city council is being advised to approve the highest bid for a contract to do the preliminary design of a bridge over the Cataraqui River (Third Crossing).

A staff report recommends the city hire J.L. Richards.  Its bid is $2.3 million.  The lowest bid was 1.35 million.  The staff report says J.L. Richards was the only bid that met or exceeded all of the requirements for the job.

Airport Expansion

Kingston City Council will be asked to go ahead with airport expansion by the Chamber of Commerce tonight – but two councillors want the 16 million dollar expansion grounded.

The Greater Kingston Chamber of Commerce will make a presentation at city council tonight.

Councillors Jeff McLaren and Rob Hutchison are hoping to convince fellow councillors the 16 million could be better spent elsewhere when the vote on approving the 2016 budget comes up tonight.
