Arrests – Attempted Murder

Two Kingston men have been charged with helping a man wanted for attempted murder while he was on the run from police.

Kingston Police arrested Justin Hunter on Friday afternoon at a home on Calderwood Drive.

Hunter has been charged with deliberately running his truck into a woman on the night of July 14th.

On Saturday – Police announced 24 year old Andrew Seguin and 25 year old Christopher Lewis have both been charged with being an accessory after the fact to attempted murder.

Police say the two men, among others, provided material assistance to Hunter.

Incest – Sentencing

A 43 year old man from Kingston has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for having sex with his daughter.

The girl was under 16 and had moved in with the man.  The case of incest was only discovered when she became pregnant and an autopsy was conducted on her stillborn baby.

The man pleaded guilty in court last week.

On top of being sentence to ten years in prison he’s been placed on the National DNA and Sex Offender registries and order to stay away from anywhere where people under 16 may frequent.

Council – Third Crossing

A staff report being presented at Tuesday night’s Kingston city council meeting recommends spending $2.95 million to get the bridge across the Cataraqui River shovel ready.

The report estimates the cost for the preliminary design at $2.6 million and the cost to prepare the financial plan at $350,000.

Sydenham Street Revived

Sydenham Street revived has been declared a success.

Project director David Tran says closing the street between Princess and Queen was received well by almost everyone.

Tran says two businesses were concerned about on street parking but says others felt closing the street in favour of creating a people space with the two week long pop up park had a positive impact.

Tran says data on pedestrian traffic and the impact on businesses in the area will be analyzed and made available to Kingston city council.

Aluminum – 75 Years in Kingston

Novelis is celebrating the 75th year of operation for its plant in Kingston.

The plant originally operated by Alcan was built in 1940.

Novelis took over Alcan’s Kingston Works in 2004.

Novelis held a celebration for staff and retirees at Fort Henry on Saturday and will hold public tours from 2-7 p.m. on Thursday.

Smile Cookies

It’s Smile Cookie time at Tim Hortons.

Tim Hortons owners in Kingston are donating the proceeds from the sales of the special chocolate chunk cookies to the University Hospitals Kingston Foundation for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Kingston General Hospital.  Last year it raised a record $67,724.

The Smile Cookie campaign runs until Sunday.

Volunteers with the University Hospitals Kingston Foundation will be helping promote the campaign at Tim Hortons in Kingston this morning.
