Corrections – Auditors Report

The Correctional Service says it accepts recommendations of the federal auditor general after Michael Ferguson found approximately 65% of offenders were unprepared for their release last year.
His report found lower-risk offenders are being released from prison later in their sentences and with less supervised time in the community because Corrections is recommending early release less often.
Corrections Canada says it will look at the risk of releasing offenders before they serve their full term and is working on better training for staff.

History File

From Tony’s Today in History file….
It was 40 years ago today that the Vietnam War came to an end.  It was a war that led to a groundswell of U-S draft dodgers who came to Canada to avoid serving in the conflict.  It’s still unclear exactly how many men and women sought sanctuary in Canada, which labelled draft dodgers as immigrants, as opposed to refugees.  But the federal government estimates that up to 40-thousand made the trip north of the border….and most of them stayed after the war.
Roads – Winter

Ontario’s transportation minister says an auditor general’s report on winter highway maintenance in the province confirms what he already knew.  The report says it’s taking an average of more than twice as long to clear highways after a storm than it did before the province began contracting out road maintenance to the lowest bidders.  Transport Minister Steven Del Duca admits the current system of winter highway maintenance has to be better.  He says last week’s budget includes money for more equipment changes and he’s promising swift action on the auditor’s recommendations.
