Drayton Avenue – Garage Fire

Investigators will be on the scene of a garage fire this morning on Drayton Avenue to confirm the cause.
The garage at 14 Drayton Ave was destroyed in a fire at around 2 this morning.
Kingston Fire and Rescue says it was able to keep the flames from spreading to the house…but it did suffer some minor damage.  The garage was a total loss and the damage estimate is $100,000.

Home Invasion

Quick work by Kingston Police resulted in three arrests after a home invasion robbery at a residence on Montreal Street near Railway and Rideau Streets.
Police say the residents of the home were robbed after several people forced their way in around 5:30 yesterday afternoon.  Nobody was injured.
Police converged on the scene and with the help of their tracking dog arrested a male teenager and a man in his 20’s.  A woman in her 20’s was arrested shortly afterwards.
They’ll appear in court for bail hearings today on a variety of charges.

Bear Spray Discharged

Two people were hit with Bear Spray and at least a dozen others were caught in a haze of the spray early this morning in the area of Princess and Division Streets.
Police say a group of two or three young men tried to pick a fight with another group of young men and when they wouldn’t fight…a large canister of the bear spray was pulled out and used.
The group trying to start the fight was last seen running south on Division Street.
Anyone with information about the incident is being asked to contact Kingston Police or Crime Stoppers.


Domestic Violence

Another day – another domestic violence incident in Kingston.
A 35 year old man faces a long list of charges after a man broke into an apartment around 11:30 Wednesday morning and threatened to commit suicide.
Police say the man got three swords from a suitcase and threatened a woman who was in the apartment with a child.  The woman and child weren’t injured.
Police seized swords and knives and have charged the man with forcing his way into the apartment, criminal harassment and a number of weapons offences.

Showcase

80 groups will be showing off what they have to offer at Kingston annual Spring and Summer Recreation and Leisure Showcase this weekend.
Organizers say there are lots of activities for people of all ages and it is not just for parents to sign up their kids for summer camps or sports.
The Showcase takes place in the Portsmouth Olympic Harbour from 10 am to 4 pm tomorrow.

Football Camp

A high level football camp featuring CFL stars and Ottawa Redblacks defensive line coach Leroy Blugh takes place at the Kingston 1000 Islands Sportsplex this weekend.
Blugh will kick off the Youth Football Camp tomorrow.
It will be coached by Saskatchewan Roughriders defensive back Matt Webster, Johnny Aprile of the Hamilton Ti-Cats and five other Queens Gaels and Vanier Cup winning stars. The camp on Saturday and Sunday is designed for players ages 12-15.

Bowling Fund Raiser

Big Brothers Big Sisters is having its largest annual fundraiser tomorrow at the Prost Bowling Centre in Kingston, Ontario.  Organizers are expecting a big turnout for Bowl For Kids Sake.  Kingston and the Islands MPP Sophie Kiwala will be bowling with her team at 1:00pm tomorrow.  Money raised during Bowl for Kids Sake will support programs and services offered by Big Brothers Big Sisters in the Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington area.

Kids for Kids

Kingston is being invaded by hundreds of young hockey players this weekend.
The Annual Kids for Kids hockey tournament brings 164 teams to the city and the proceeds go to support children’s charities.
A cheque for $50,000 will be presented to the Boys and Girls Club of Kingston and the Pediatrics Department at Kingston General Hospital during the official opening ceremonies at 4:00 p.m. tomorrow.

Earth Hour

Earth Hour is tomorrow between 8:30 and 9:30 at night.  The city is hosting an unplugged concert in Springer Market Square.
The first 200 people at the event will get candles to light things up when the electricity goes off.
The World Wildlife Federation encourages people to turn out the lights for an hour Satu
